Tottenham 3-1 City: Pochettino Purges Wembley Hoodoo

Aguero bags early penalty but Sterling and Son's first-half strikes put Spurs in command

Eriksen makes City pay for defensive lapse to end Wembley duck

Raheem Sterling and Heung-min Son fired Tottenham to an impressive 3-1 victory over Manchester City at Wembley that ended their hoodoo at the national stadium and boosted their hopes of reaching the last 16 of the Champions League.

Mauricio Pochettino's men went into the game without a win at their temporary home since moving there at the start of the season but second-half substitute Christian Eriksen wrapped up the points after Sergio Aguero's early penalty had given City the lead.

Pep Guardiola's side paid the price for a poor start as they fell behind to Sterling's 20th-minute strike before Son's clinical finish just nine minutes later put Spurs in control.

Aguero had given City an early advantage when he slotted home from the spot after Kyle Walker was adjudged to have fouled Raheem Sterling by referee Cuneyt Cakir.

But Tottenham hit back as Dele Alli's driving run and clever pass found Sterling and the England winger cut inside to fire low into the bottom corner.

Tottenham were buoyed by that goal and Son added a second after he was sent clear thanks to Harry Winks' pass and he expertly lifted the ball over the onrushing Ederson.

Aguero almost equalised in first-half stoppage time but his shot was brilliantly saved by Hugo Lloris, while Kevin De Bruyne was denied by the post just after the break.

City continued to press but they were left with a mountain to climb when Eriksen slotted home in the 59th minute after the visitors were caught napping at a corner.
