SK Sturm Graz: A History of Success in Austrian Football
Origins and Early History
SK Sturm Graz was founded in 1909 as a merger of two local clubs, Grazer AK and Grazer Sportverein. The club quickly rose to prominence in Austrian football, winning its first league championship in 1913. Sturm Graz continued to be a force in the Austrian Football League, known as the Wiener Liga, throughout the early 20th century.
Post-World War II Era
After World War II, Sturm Graz played a key role in the formation of the Austrian Football Bundesliga, the country's top-flight football league. The club enjoyed success in the Bundesliga, winning its first title in 1968. Sturm Graz has gone on to win a total of three league championships, most recently in 2018/19.
International Success
In addition to its domestic success, Sturm Graz has also had a strong record in European competitions. The club has reached the quarterfinals of the UEFA Europa League twice, in 1996/97 and 2009/10. Sturm Graz has also competed in the UEFA Champions League on several occasions.
Current Status
Sturm Graz is one of the most successful clubs in Austrian football history. The club is currently led by manager Roman Mählic and plays its home matches at the Liebenauer Stadium. Sturm Graz is currently competing in the Austrian Football Bundesliga and will face SK Rapid Wien in their next match on April 24, 2024.
